A little while ago I got into a conversation with the Mums over on the Mums’ Days Facebook wall about Boys’ Fashion and one of the key things that stuck out for me was the over-riding feeling that girls clothes are lovely and fun but boys’ fashion in general is a bit boring! Mums’ (of boys and girls alike!) want colour!
But aside from colour, I’ve been having a think about what else we can do as mamas with little fellas, to add a bit of fun to their wardrobes!
Boys’ Fashion Can Be Fun Too
So it seems a common complaint made by new mothers is that it’s far easier to find cute clothes for girls… and, while there is an element of truth in that, it doesn’t mean baby boy clothes can’t be fun too. Here are 7 ideas to make your little man’s wardrobe stand out from the crowd.
1. Embrace pattern
Just because you have a baby boy, it doesn’t mean you have to stick to neutrals and solids. A bright colour, pattern or print can make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to mix either: a range of patterns ensures visual interest.
2. Have fun with t-shirts or jumpers
Like pattern, an interesting t-shirt or jumper can be an excellent way of adding a little variety to your baby boy’s wardrobe. Try something with a fun design: after all, it might be an excellent way to teach your child the names of the animals!
Kermit is an animal too you know?!
3. Dress up
Little boys like dressing up too! And I’m not just talking super heroes (although sending your kids out in fancy dress is definitely fun!!)… Make your little man the smartest in the room with a collared shirt or baby bow tie. There’s nothing more adorable than a dapper, little gentleman.
4. Don’t be afraid to accessorize
Not so much jewellery and hair bows here… but there’s a whole range of ways to make your baby’s outfit stand out. Hats, shoes, and mini-baseball caps can make a basic ensemble look super cute. I have quite a few shoes from those early days and I can’t bare to throw them out, they are soooo sweet!
5. Put a sock in it
I am obsessed with socks and I don’t care who knows it. Reuben has more socks than he could wear in a month but a pair of funky socks can make an amazing difference to an outfit. They might add a dash of colour or simply bring a smile to your face. Current favourites of mine include a selection of nautical socks but for a while Reuben would only wear his super mouse socks! When he was little I was also in love with these cow boy inspired socks, which I’d put him in even when it didn’t match…fun all the same!
Keep it simple
After everything said above, it might seem like a contradiction to say keep things simple. But there’s no getting away from the fact that the simplest outfits are sometimes also the sweetest. I tend to go for colour somewhere but if it’s a colourful top, I’ll go for simple cords for bottoms. And when he was really little, just a sweet little onesie would do the trick!

And a final piece of advice…
Though this post is aimed at new mothers, some of the ideas above would make excellent baby shower gift ideas! So, if you know someone who’s about to have a baby boy, you could show off your new knowledge of fun boys’ fashion! You’re welcome 😉
How do you make your Boys’ Fashion fun?
I’d love to hear your tips and tricks in the comments below!

I love boys fashion here and really try and champion on both my blogs, there are so many beautiful brands out there from me&i to Mamas & Papas, Zara and designers like RL and Tommy Hilfiger with the most stunning, bold, bright and gorgeous boyswear. Such a lovely post x
I LOVE boys clothes. Everytime I go clothes shopping for my girls I always have a quick look at the boys clothes – I have an excuse now because I’ve got a nephew but I would love a boy in the future.

Boys should definitely not have boring wardrobes! I’m trying to make T’s as bright and colourful as possible x
Great post, I have a girl and a boy and also find much more variety in stores for the girls not so much the boys ! Great tips will def try them x
I LOVE boys clothes (as you can probably tell from most of my blog posts :-D) Agree with you, its all about bright colours, choosing what colours suit your boy and coordination. Bright t-shirts and trendy but comfy jeans. My fave shops for cute and funky boys clothes are H&M, Debenhams Ted Baker and Tesco/Sainsbury’s TU xx
Fab tips huni. Still glad I have a girl! 😉 But Reubs is such a well dressed little man xxx
I used to think that girls clothes were more exciting than boys but recently I’ve been looking at all the little boys stuff and wondering if I can get away with putting Elsa in it! The little shirts in Next are so cute and I’m obsessed with fun prints like dinosaurs. Girls stuff can get a bit repetitive sometimes… so much pink!
I hated all the boys clothes I saw when I was pregnant but since then (and having a girl!) I really think there’s been a big improvement. Or maybe I’m just looking at things differently because I’m getting a bit tired of pink and purple and broderie anglaise?!?!

I haven’t spent much time looking at boys clothes as we found out Boo was a girl so we only looked at girls clothes, the boys areas in shops do tend to be a bit lacking in colour though I must admit, but then every now and again you will find some really amazing bits.
Yes! I’ve heard that from mums of girls, every now and then they will buy some boys bits and pieces for them 🙂 thanks love xx
ooh I love those little shoes all lined up, so cute! I must admit I always thought boys clothes were boring til I had my little one. There’s some gorgeous clothes about these days x
Yes I think the brands have massively upped their games these days and if you have a good luck, you can find some real gems 🙂 thanks love xx
Oh my word, look at those pics!!! I’m pretty sure I’m having another girl but I will totally be checking back here in the event it’s a boy baby! Mim @ http://www.mamamim.com #TheList

I have 2 boys Hannah and I love dressing then there is so much cool stuff out there boy boys xx
Good! Glad to hear it 🙂 There really is if you have a little look! xx
I used to think all the fun was over in the girls section too..two boys later and I realise I have a thing for Pirate prints and cool funky rockbands tshirts! I couldn’t name two Rolling Stones songs but could easily drag out at least 4 Stones t-shirts in little boy sizes!
Joining #TheList for the first time and loving discovering new bloggers! x
Ha!! That’s brilliant – I think we have a Stones T-shirt too and ditto on the song naming 😉 I also have a penchant for a bit of pirate – can’t beat a skull and crossbones print!
Thanks love xx
I love this post! I am expecting a little boy in june, and I am so used to buying girly clothes! So this is a great post for me.
Pinning right now 🙂
Sarah xx
oooooooh! Congratulations – you are going to have so much fun picking out little fella outfits 🙂 xxxx
I love boys’ fashion! Mothercare always has lovely pieces and I’m currently loving Toby in Fred & Noah boy leggings because they’re utterly gorgeous, super soft on his eczema-riddled skin and he seems really comfy in them xx #TheList
Oh bless him – Reuben has eczema too, it’s awful isn’t it 🙁 Those leggings sound perfect xxxx
awwww, the sweetest pics! The Kermie jumper is the shizzle. Boys fashion is coming into its own – there’s always great stuff at Next I find and H&M if you rummage. #TheList
seriously, boys clothes have come so far since I had Lewis 16 years ago. It used to be more fun for me dressing Holly but Reuben looks gorgeous. Oh his little shoes eeeeek!!!!
Lovely post and great tips! Like anything in life – boys fashion is what you make it! 😉 And Reuben is just the cutest! Gorgeous boy! x
I love boys clothes. I have a four year old girl and an eight month old son, and before I had Alex, it was all about pink in our house (mainly because Becky loves it, but also because most of girls clothes are pink – boring! :-), and I was getting a bit fed up with it. I always had a thing for boys clothes, and I love all the little dude things. But you’re absolutely right, I try to jazz up his wardrobe and even though I love blue, I try to dress him in patterns, in red, yellow and green, too, to have more of a variety. But whatever the preference, kids clothes in general are so cute and such fun to buy, whether pink, blue or otherwise! 🙂
