Romantic meal...for 3?

14 Feb, 2019

We’re not really ones to go in for Valentines Day*. However, and I don’t think this is any great secret or that unusual, romance in our house post baby is at an all time low.  So I think we both have felt that this day required some attention and we’re going to make an effort to celebrate our love and Valentines with a baby in tow.

At the beginning of the week I optimistically bought a 3 course meal deal from Tesco (£20 for starter, 2 mains, side, dessert and a bottle of wine. I’ve also got myself some fake fizz to celebrate in t-total style). I’m now left considering the logistics of such a delightful affair. How does one do Valentines with a baby?

It’s fair to say we don’t have the evening routine down yet. We don’t have any routine down yet for that matter. Nancy is a (mostly) content baby during the day so I can potter about and get little jobs done while she watches. But she’ll snack all day and either sleep on me or while we’re out.

At night I put her down between 8 and 9pm then go to bed myself. She has started to sleep for longer (and has slept through the night a handful of times!!), so unlike with Reuben where I was getting desperate for both time during the day and sleep at night, I’ve been less bothered about routines. That does mean, however, that Mike and I are never without the company of either one or both of our children. Lovely as they are, it is nice to have some alone time too.

Today we’re in a position where I’d like to have a romantic ready meal with my love and I’m not entirely sure when said meal will take place. If I try to put Nancy down earlier I run the risk of spending most of the evening in and out of our room settling her and eating at 9pm (not a popular choice in my eyes!). Or we have it earlier and I’m almost certainly going to be eating my lamb shank one handed while breastfeeding. Breasts out at dinner is not as romance inducing as it once was.

At the end of the day, any plan I make is likely to not pan out. So, one-handed lamb shank eating while breastfeeding may be the best it’s going to get. But as long as I’m doing it in my best maternity bra, that’s got to be worth something right?!

What are your plans for Valentines?

* Having said that, if my calculations are correct Nancy may have been conceived on this day last year. Haha!

It's Valentine Competition Time!

27 Jan, 2016

Back in December I was invited by the All in One Company to design onesies for all the family. I can now confirm that I have spent most/all of January, hiding away from the cold and the rain in my onesie.

Because I think everyone should have a onesie, I’m happy to say that I have a Valentines Competition to win £100 to spend at the All-in-One company!

You can either give the gift of comfort to your loved one and design them a special valentines present… or keep all the pleasures for yourself (I would not blame you!). Scroll to the bottom for more info on the competition! (more…)

It’s nearly Valentines!! Or if you’re moving next week, like us, you might have already had it. We’re moving on Tuesday (TUESDAY!! As in 4 days time. Argh!!) so I decided to bring Valentines forward a week or so.

This year I wanted to give Mike a decent present. He always gives me such lovely, thoughtful gifts, so I made him something. A 12 Date Gift Booklet!

{The process brought back so many memories of teenage years, being all crafty. It was fun and I think the process on its own was quite therapeutic!}

I have to say I’m quite proud of this! And I love the personalised paper from wrap.me – so easy but really special. All you have to do is select some of your favourite photos and wrap.me make up a whole roll of awesome wrapping paper with it!

I used the wrap.me paper to wrap the box and also to make him this little book of 12 dates for us to do over the next 12 months. One for each month.

Valentines Vlog – How to make a 12 Date Gift Book

Should you fancy doing something similar for your loved one, I have done a video tutorial! It turns out those Blue Peter presenters make it look a LOT easier than it is to film a tutorial!! But here you go – feel free to fire over any questions if you don’t understand how to do something.

It really is so simple and I can see myself doing this again for other people as a sweet little (thrifty!) gift.

The kind of dates I’ve given Mike include:

  • a meal out
  • an overnight stay in March at the Ox Pasture Hall Hotel (might just happen to be the day after my birthday!)
  • an at home movie night
  • a cookery course
  • a 5 day holiday!!

So if you fancy giving your other half something like this, it certainly doesn’t need to be pricey but if you can get a babysitter I would recommend it!

For those who can’t get a babysitter, don’t panic, here are 11 ideas for at home date nights. The main thing is that you’ve spent some time thinking about your loved one and planning one to one time together. Having kids (particularly ones with a penchant for the early morning) can be tiring and the weeks fly by. Before you know it it’s Easter and you haven’t spent any quality time together.

I took Mike out for a lunch date to Jesmond Dene House – ideal as it meant we didn’t need a babysitter – and gave him the gift there over a glass of bubbly.

His reaction was so much better than I thought it would be. I thought he would laugh at me for making this goofy present but far from it. He was delighted that I spent time on planning things to do, things to look forward to, and he absolutely loved the wrap.me paper. Good job as I’ve got loads left! Cheers!

What have you got planned for a Valentines Gift?

I’d love to hear what you’ve got up your sleeves for your loved ones!

Love is …Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you are getting spoilt (either by your partner or yourself!) and you’re feeling the love.

I was woken up this morning by Mike sleepily saying, “You are beautiful and sexy. And clever. Definitely clever.” Whatever. Where’s my present?!

We are on route, minus the children, to London for a night out with my best friend and her partner. It’s going to be BRILLIANT. But in the pit of my stomach I have an ache having left Reuben, happy as anything with Grandad and almost too busy to say goodbye. He’s my little dude and while I’m sooooo excited for tonight, I can’t wait to see him again. Which is why this tagged blog from Beth is so fitting.

Beth from Betty and the Bumps has basically chain lettered me. She’s asked me to think about Love now that I’m a parent and if it’s changed. I’m paraphrasing as the original message from My Petit Canard was much more thoughtful! I loved what Beth wrote about this…it was so true! From not doing your hair to going out makeup less for months, these are the things we do because we love our little ones. And, here are my loves.

Love is

Love is…spending hours reading about weaning, making beautiful, organic, homemade food only to have it throw across the room x 1000.

Love is…getting a kiss on the lips. An actual kiss, with puckered lips *heart melts*

Love is…hearing the word “mum” from your little one.

Love is…not being able to watch or listen to The News because the world is too cruel to bare now.

Love is…reading the world’s most boring book over and over. Ditto singing the same song.

Love is…Eskimo kisses followed by little fingers pointing out the features of my face; our bedtime ritual.

Love is…sharing a bath with your baby and his sandwich.

Love is…sharing a bath with your baby and a sandwich #valentines

Now it’s your turn! How would you finish this sentence? Love is …?

There are some lovely suggestions from my Mums’ Days mums over on the Facebook Wall too if you want to join in the conversation there?

Mike and I aren’t big on Valentine’s Day Poems or cards (although we seem to be better than on our actual anniversary!). As a romantic gesture this year I organised (with a lot of help from my best mate) for us to go away for a surprise. I was doing really well with the surprise until Mike noticed that a shed load of money had been paid to East Coast Rail for our train tickets and little by little he’s ended up finding out exactly what we’re doing. Asking him if his suit needed a dry clean was the final straw. Anyway, we’re going to something super cool in London… a Future Cinema ‘immersive experience’ of Who Framed Roger Rabbit!!! I know!

So while I’ve spent a small fortune on a single night out in London, I think the act of present giving is not going to happen  but I do enjoy some funny Valentines Day poems! And I can imagine something like this will be scribbled on a hand made card to make the occasion!

What Valentines Day Poem will you be writing in your card?! Comment below and the best will win a gold star!
