All the spark without the bang
Reuben and I spent some time yesterday doing a bit more ‘baking’ (this requires more fridge than cooker!) together. So today I bring you Chocolate Fireworks!
Primula in your Chocolate Firework
A few weeks ago I was sent some Primula (have I just sent you on a time warp back to the 80s and your mum (or dad or gran, etc) is squeezing some on toast? Yep, that happened to me too). Well, I’ll be honest I wasn’t that keen on doing a feature, I had my preconceptions, which weren’t very positive.
However, I read the tube and I stand corrected! Firstly, I thought a tube a Primula would outlive the apocalypse but actually the shelf life isn’t that long (a good thing!). Long enough to be convenient but not pumped full of chemicals. Secondly, I was sent their new kids version, which means it has a lot less salt. Thirdly, Primula give all their profits to charity. Now that is something I really admire in my cheese.
So, I’ve been wracking my brain for what we could do that would be a bit different and then low and behold, last weekend my mum turned up with Chocolate Conkers, which are made with cream cheese and bourbon biscuits. Perfect and super easy! We’re kind of past conked season now, so I’ve upped the anti and turned the conkers into…Fireworks!
Chocolate Fireworks
Ingredients
- 100g chocolate biscuit (I’ve just the Heinz biscotti, suitable for 7+ months, but you can also use bourbons)
- 100g primula (that’s how much is in a tube – if using Bourbons you don’t need half as much cheese)
- 75g chocolate
- sprinkles for decorating
- tooth picks to use as sticks
1. Smash up the biscuits – you want a very fine crumb (and I wouldn’t recommend using a hand blender unless you want your kitchen covered in crumbs like mine)! Use either a bag and crush by hand or a blender.
2. Combine the biscuit crumbs with the primula. You want to make a kind of dough that sticks together. Really work to combine it well.
3. Once your mixture will stick, roll it into little balls and leave in the fridge for a few hours to set. When you’re ready to decorate, stick a tooth pick in each ball.
4. Melt your chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water…mmm is there anything better than chocolate melting?
5. Get your sprinkles ready in separate bowls then get your child ready to decorate!
6. Coat each ball in melted chocolate (I did this bit, then passed it to Reuben)
7. Then decorate with sprinkles. I let Reuben have two to decorate as he was going to eat them all otherwise – damage/tantrum control!
8. Then I did the rest (so I can’t even blame him for the poor decorating skills!) and popped them back in the fridge to set.
I’ve added a bit of retro by covering an orange in silver foil to stick our chocolate fireworks in – for that 80s party look!
What do you think of our Chocolate Fireworks?!
So easy to do with kids (I’m thinking about my rainy day activities for toddlers post!) and great for a Halloween, Bonfire Night or even a Christmas/New Year party! Reuben totally loved them and I felt a bit happier knowing they weren’t overloaded with salt and sugar. However, I would definitely do the bourbon version if there are adults coming, as we have a sweeter pallet!
To help in the creation of this post I was sent 3 tubes of Primula kids. For more ideas for how to make your life a little more squeezy, have a look at this Picnic Recipe Book or these Sweet Treats Recipes, that Primula have put together. I’ll be heading there for ideas to use up the other 2 tubes!
