Have you seen the 12 Days of Christmas has started today?! It’s a fabulous set of competitions that I’m running with my blogging buddies Aby and Ang! It starts today and runs until 12th December and it’s basically a collection of our favourite things from 2014. We’re looking forward to spoiling you!! And from the 12 Days of Christmas I’ve managed to move on to the 12 Days of Detox, today being Day 1, the Detox Diet. It’s a bit of a story, starting with me thinking I was pregnant, so stick with me!

1. Am I pregnant?

This morning I woke up and I felt pregnant. My boobs seem huge and tender at the moment (TMI), I feel chubbier than normal and I feel generally exhausted! So, after dropping Reuben off with Grandma and Grandad, I went and picked up a test. It was negative.

I think so…

I was asked at Reuben’s 27 month developmental check if we were planning to have more and I did THE face. You know the one? The “not at the moment, gosh can you imagine?” face. But there’s nothing quite like waiting for a pregnancy test to do its thing for your true feelings to come out.

Three years ago this week I found out I was pregnant for the first time. I suppose this time of year just really reminds me of that. I’d never been overly enthusiastic about getting pregnant per say. I wanted to get pregnant but I think I saw it as more of a project as I found it really hard to visualise the end product (a beautiful baby!). I would look at baby grows but I just couldn’t imagine how my life would change. How I would feel.

But now I do know. And I know I’d like another one…but I just don’t know when! Reuben is going to be at least 3 years older than the next, if we are blessed with a next. I feel like time is ticking but I’m still not quite sure. For all the reasons I mentioned here. That said, when I was waiting for the line, I probably wouldn’t have minded having the choice taken out of my hands!

2. What now?

So once I had established that I wasn’t pregnant, I went to the gym and then continued to read my book “Steal like an Artist” which I’m really enjoying. It’s all about tapping into your creativity. Today’s lesson was to a) remove yourself from your computer and b) do something boring. The act of either/both should be enough to get your brain box whirring.

I’ve been meaning to put away clothes and a whole host of other ‘things’ in our bedroom for weeks now. Honestly, there’s nothing worse than going to bed and getting up in chaos and yet everything has been more important than doing this little chore. Armed with a pen and some post-it notes, I set about tidying and every now and again I’d get an idea. I’d jot it down, stick it to the mirror, then carry on. I kept this up until the room was tidy and there was a happy array of post-its on the mirror. Then the brainwave happened as I hung up my Christmas Dress…

I bought this dress ready for the highlight of my Christmas social life – a night out with a bunch of our friends on the 12th December. However, it was snug when I bought it, and it’s even snugger now! Enter the 12 Days of Detox!

I basically sat down and scribbled on 12 post-it notes what I want to do for the next 12 days. And what started out as a diet detox, turned into a life detox and the post-its covered everything from diet and beauty to organisation and inspiration. Because we are more than just our bodies, we are our minds too and I for one am sick of feeling uninspired and fat!

The fact of the matter is I’m not fat but I feel it because of what I’m doing and eating on a day-to-day basis. Out with the bad and in with the good*

And the crucial thing? It’s starting TODAY, not tomorrow. So, for the next 12 days I’m going to bore you with it too!

*(in my humble opinion – don’t for one minute think I’m preaching to you, this is more an exercise in being open and honest and trying to do better for me, if it inspires anyone else along the way, that’s cool. But equally you are entitled to just think I’m a dooshbag!)

12 Days of Detox: DAY 1 – Detox Diet

With a good detox it feels natural to start with the detox diet. You are what you eat, right?

Detox Diet – OUT

Caffeine – I don’t have anything against tea or coffee but I have got in to a nasty habit of drinking about 10 pints of coffee in the morning and then lots of tea in the afternoon. I don’t believe that’s very good for anyone! Not to mention the amount of milk I’m drinking. I have a bad sense of smell as it is but I notice it gets worse the more milk I’m drinking!! I could be totally wrong but I’m going to cut down on the mega combo for the next 12 days and I’ll check back in on the smell front!

Booze – I’m not going to fess up to how much we drink but I think it would shock a few people. And to be totally honest it’s just another bad habit related to feeling tired around 7pm. Rather than starting to wind down and thinking about an early night, we will drink red wine. Neither Mike nor I have that thing people like to call ‘moderation’ so it’s all or nothing. And, it’s a rut I’m ready to get out of it. So for the next 12 Days (apart from 7th December as we have been invited to stay and review Jesmond Dene House’s newest Hotel, St Mary’s Inn, and sample their Christmas Menu with a bottle of wine!)

Sugar/refined carbs – I’m not a huge sugar/sweet fan, but it’s the sort of thing that unless I’m strict on, I’ll eat it mindlessly. And, with more chocolate and advent calendars in this house than you can shake a stick at, for the next 12 days I’m shunning the white stuff and white refined carbs for good measure.

Meat? – My blogging buddy Vicky also has got me thinking about meat after this tweet…I don’t think I’m going to cut it out yet, but we’ll see how I feel by the end of the week.

Detox Diet – IN

Green juice – I think regulars know that I like a green juice from time to time. It’s my go-to when I need to lose a pound or two or generally want a healthy kick up the butt! To read more about my love of the green juice, read this article about weight loss after pregnancy. I don’t think I’ve ever been more animated about the subject!! And I will be bringing out a full e-book in the NY about juicing and how to do it right, which you can have, my lovely reader, for free.

Green and herbal tea and LOADS of water – Partly for something to drink that isn’t gallons of coffee or red wine and partly for overall cleansing, I’m just going to go for it. Green tea does have caffeine in so I’m not going to go too wild but it also has loads of health benefits (antioxidants and fat burning to name but a few!) and for more info on why you should drink water, see this ace post from my buddy Susan who writes Happy, Healthy Mama (loving her Natural Living series)! Be GONE wrinkles or at least don’t get bigger for the next 12 days.

Good quality, organic protein and veg – I’m talking chicken breast, steak, eggs, etc. with loads of leafy green veg, some sweet potato or brown rice.

12 Days of Detox diet plan example

Breakfast Green Juice (see here for recipe inspiration)

Snack Green tea with a handful of nuts

Lunch Chicken breast with roast veg (pumpkin, onion, tomato) and kale, half a sweet potato

Supper Cup of Pukka Night Time Tea and bath/good book

Throughout the day lots of herbal tea (I love the selection from Pukka, particular Detox and Cleanse!) and 2lt water.

Please note…I am not a nutritionist this is just MY plan and what works for me!

That’s it for Day 1 of the 12 Days of Detox. Day 2 will cover exercise and TV addiction.

What do you think of the 12 Days of Detox? Do you fancy joining me?!

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below and it would be especially fun to have a pal or two to do it with!
