if you’re anything like me, you find it difficult to even find time to have a wash, there’s always something more pressing. Here I’m hoping to encourage myself and you to put yourself first a bit more!

2nd time around

Phew… we got there in the end with breastfeeding. Although the toe curling is (almost) a distant memory now Nancy is nearly 3 months old, and it has fallen into place, I’m here to hold my hand up. I found it tough y’all.

Despite feeding Reuben up until he was 7 months (combination feeding from about 3 or 4 months), I was not prepared for the onslaught I was about to get this time around.

With Reuben he couldn’t latch properly so before they would let me leave the hospital they wanted to be sure he could feed. After about 48 hours and a lot of booby manhandling, I was given nipple shields to try. He finally had a good feed and away we went.

It took MONTHS to get him off the nipple shields and they were so inconvenient (you can read about my nipple shield adventures here). I was forever cleaning and sterilising the shields. I must have owned hundreds as I’d leave them all over the house and could never find one when I needed it. But I happily fed him up to about 7 months, when he decided to stop, no particular drama.

I don’t want to put anyone off here because I’m so glad I was able to stick with it (I say ‘able’ because I have friends that were so cracked, their babies were drawing blood and they had to stop – and while it felt pretty awful, it never got that bad for me).

But the inconvenience of the nipple shields wasn’t a patch on the shear torture that was breastfeeding in the first few weeks without any protection.

Why did none of you tell me?!??! I have a new found respect for anyone who has breastfed unprotected. I don’t care how long or short it was, breastfeeding is serious business. I honestly used my hypnobirthing breathing MORE for breastfeeding than I did for labour.

Now I’m out the other side, I can happily say it’s great. Convenient, quick, easy and awesome. And, if you’re in the middle of it…the pain does stop. Every day gets a little easier until one day you’re like, ‘oh, this doesn’t hurt anymore!’ Then you forget the pain because, let’s face it, Mother Nature and Time are in cahoots (otherwise we’d never have more than one baby!).

Daily blogging?

Dear Diary, I want to get back into blogging!!! I’ve been saying it for a year now and I’m still not into the rhythm. Thanks to Box Happy (and my lovely business partner, Emily, for keeping me accountable!), I have got back into the habit of using instagram and Facebook daily. And crucially…enjoying it!

I’ve been sharing little snippets of our day-to-day lives on Instagram stories (which automatically go to Facebook) and love doing that.  So the next step now is to get back on here.

I’ve been chatting with Katy from What Katy Said (she has a rather marvellous competition on here at the mo too!). She’s been a long suffering (we even had a blog together at one point!!) but very complimentary blogging friend for years. She’s been encouraging me to get back on the horse, blog daily (!!) and warm up my old Facebook community, which I used to love so much.

I still have a house full of builders, a new business to run, oh and did I mention I have newborn (less than 3 months is still new right?)? While I’m not going to put pressure on myself to produce something world-changing everyday (just every few!), the practise of writing daily is a good one for me. I enjoy it and it stops becoming a chore… in theory. (You can read about my thoughts on blogging daily here, I did it throughout 2014 – a million years ago in internet terms!)

I’m saying it out loud here too because the other thing I enjoy (read: require in order to get ANYTHING DONE) is accountability. I tell you, you don’t need to read it everyday but just knowing that you might is enough for me to make sure I don’t miss a day. So, er, see you tomorrow!

I’m Grumpy!

Or is it overwhelmed? 

  1. The house is an ongoing challenge (this morning we had to empty the room we dump things in and feed the animals – that stuff’s got to go somewhere! – and then decide on where to put the washer and dryer. And do we want a sink? And what work surfaces? I know YOU would have already decided this stuff but it completely caught me by surprise that this was happening today!)
  2. I’ve got a load to do for Box Happy – I’m really pleased with what we have so far for the Feb Box (which is all about self-care and being your own Valentine – what I need a bit of too) but there’s still so much to do and just NO TIME!! Because…
  3. I have a newborn – it’s the broken sleep that does it!

Sleepy = grumpy

A few weeks ago Nancy was sleeping for a 6-7 hour stretch in the night, which meant I was getting that good quality sleep you need to feel human (I know lucky bugger). Now she’s going for a maximum of 2-3 hours and I can really feel the difference. I’m hoping it’s because she’s been poorly and not a sign of things to come. I’m the kind of person who needs a lot of sleep or the wheels fall off the whole operation. As is becoming obvious this week. So the thought of this being an ongoing thing is resulting in tears.

Routine Limbo

I’m in this constant limbo of trying to follow a routine because there is this hope that with a routine they’ll sleep through sooner… (I loosely followed Tizzy Hall’s Save Our Sleep with Reuben because I liked knowing what I was meant to be doing – so Ive been using that again) only for Nancy to completely do her own thing. I try to wake her at 7 for a feed but she’ll snack then sleep until 8/8:30, which is when I’m meant to put her down for her morning nap…

But I’m also very aware that I don’t want to wish this time away. She will sleep through one day and she’s so gorgeous right now, I don’t want to waste a minute not enjoying her.

Looking after myself

I’m feeling pretty down on myself for not being back in my old jeans. Actually I am back in one pair but they’re bloody tight! I feel stupid for even saying it because I’m so proud of what my body’s done and been through. It’s the weight I’ve put on since having Nancy that’s the issue. Tiredness and busyness is resulting in poor eating choices. Plus I got on the scales…and a week after eating healthy vegetables (aka ones that haven’t been covered in butter or gravy) and not eating every hour, I didn’t lose a single pound. This worries me as I’ve 2 and half stone to lose. So, I feel like I’ve got quite a mountain to climb.

This quote we shared on the Box Happy social pages yesterday is perfect for me to remember right now. Again, I will get there and I don’t want to waste this precious time feeling bad about myself!

I need to be sure I make some better choices and that no doubt comes down to not having to make choices at all. Meal planning and prepping when I’m not tired for example. Of course you’re going to grab a pizza if you’re hungry and knackered! We’re all human. But if you have something healthy and ready to go in the fridge, then you’re making life a lot easier for you and your extra love handles.

So that’s where I am right now! I’d love to hear any advice you have re routines and sleep deprivation and also meal prepping and self-care/love in these early days. Because they are still early days. I need to remember that! and 6 other things I've loved this pregnancy

I had my 39 week check up with the midwife yesterday and sh*t is getting real!! She was saying things like, I probably won’t see you next week…but then also mentioning booking in for inductions. Gah! I really don’t want an induction. SO this week I’m really going to focus in on getting the old Oxytocin levels up and hopefully coxing this baby out naturally. Plenty of pregnancy yoga too to get babe in the right position…

In the meantime, I thought I’d share a bit about how this pregnancy, my second, has been since I’ve done exactly zero blogging about it!

Here are 7 things I’ve loved this time around.

I’ve been taking Forrest Yoga classes with my friend Natalie for quite some time before getting pregnant and once I was pregnant she helped me to come up with a shortish routine that I could do as my bump expanded.

What I read last month...

At the beginning of June I had about 8 different books on the go and I wasn’t finishing any of them. Then in a flurry, I finished 3 books in a week. That was a good week, I love the feeling of accomplishment you get when you finish a book!

Up until recently I’d been starting books but not necessarily ever finishing them. But I think that’s the nature of what I often read…books more along the self-help line and if they aren’t fully appealing to me, I’ll put them down and not finish them.

In June I switched this up a bit and to make sure I’m reading different types of books at the same time:

  • books about self-help and/or writing (such as The Miracle Morning and Show Your Work);
  • books for research (I’m working on a kids’ book which I think will be aimed at the 8-12 age bracket);
  • books with Reuben (we’ve just had an overhaul and you can see his reading list here); and,
  • books for fun (I haven’t read anything like this for months).
